Sunday reading – my love for books

“On Sundays, we read books.”

That’s my usual line to my one year old niece . We spend the morning trying to ‘read’  but she would rather read my book  than hers.

In this digital era, I hope I can transmit my love for books with the new generation.

As a kid, I loved reading. It was my favourite pastime.  I have read Enid Blyton’s Secret Seven, Famous Five and the Magic Faraway Tree series, filled with magic and adventures.

My primary school teacher encouraged my love for reading. I still remember he gifted me a French book called les “petites filles modeles” which I must have read at least eight times! I had finished reading the book in one night.

Books were an obsession and I would read in the bathroom or with a candle when the lights were switched off and everyone has gone to bed.

As I joined secondary school, I discovered a lot of treasures from the British Council in Rose Hill, reading English literature and Roald Dahl. He is my favourite author with his books like Mathilda, the big friendly giant, Charlie and the chocolate factory. I also loved his autobiographical books –  Boy and Going Solo.

My dad also encouraged my love for reading and used to buy books for me. I sincerely think that books greatly improve one’s vocabulary and memory. Books also allow us to experience the world through different lenses and become critical thinkers.

I was not reading for academic purposes but just loved reading and letting my imagination run wild.

I still enjoy reading although I read traditional books a lot less nowadays; but still for me nothing beats a more relaxing day than staying home with a book. Did you know a book lover is called a bibliophile?

Do you enjoy reading? I would love to read your posts about your favourite books.

P. S I have also read all the Harry Potter books
