We have seen a lot of buzz on social media lately about the cutting down of a Banyan tree in Black River because of a construction project.

I drove past the site yesterday and saw absolutely no reason why the tree had to be cut. The project is called Banyan Square and as the name suggests, having a Banyan tree there would have enhanced the environment and make the project more credible.

What has touched me lately is the number of people who have raised their voice against this crime. I call it a crime because for me a tree is a living being. A tree has the right to live on this planet as much as any human being. Though it is a sad state of affairs, this incident is raising human consciousness about the importance of trees and protection of the environment.

I wish we could plant more trees and prevent existing trees from being cut for stupid reasons.

My phone did this video – a reel of various photos and videos I have taken over time and it reminded me of how much I love being among trees.

The peacefulness, the silence, the cool atmosphere; they lower your cortisol and stress level, making one feel good instantly.

I could walk alone in the forest on my own, with my thoughts and focusing on my breath. Trails and family trips are nice too but I think being on our own in the forest is a reminder of how small we are as a human compared to those big ancient trees.

The environment can exist and run on its own without any human interaction but we humans have an ego to control and destroy.

It is time to raise human consciousness that trees have the right to exist as much as we do on planet earth.

We have to address issues such as deforestation and climate change as they are crucial for the survival of humans on this planet. We also need to become conscious of how our actions can destroy the fragile ecosystem that we live in.

The government should start an afforestation campaign around the island. This is not a short term assignment and should be the priority of all sustainability projects. We need trees for the future generations.
